Re: Copy As Plain Text

Post by Jonathan Sachs » October 17th, 2016, 9:01 am

I find Copy as Plain Text very useful, but there are a couple of problems:

1. The link to this forum topic on the download page is invalid (it displays a forum page that says "The topic does not exist").

2. When I'm copying text from a Microsoft Office document to a Firefox form, Copy as Plain Text is useless. I must copy rich text in Word because Word doesn't copy as plain text; it pastes. Then I must paste as rich text because Firefox doesn't paste as plain text; it copies.

According to leading usage statistics, 10% to 16% of users use Firefox. There are no comparable statistics for office applications, but it's a safe bet that Microsoft Office has a virtual monopoly in this application area. There are competitors, but their proportion of users is tiny.

In other words, while there is no official standard for "copy as plain text" versus "paste as plain text," Microsoft Office sets the de facto standard, and it is "paste." "Copy as Plain Text" does it backwards.

Thank you Laura for your kind words.
Currently, there does not exist a version of Copy As Plain Text for the Chrome or Chromium browsers. I do use those browsers on occasion and they both have the built in option to paste without formatting, but not copy without formatting. This keeps it browser centric, which I think is what Google is intentional about, but it does not help when wanting to paste plain text into another program. Not to mention with any additional features.

I found the extension to which you implied, it's from someone in Germany and not made by me. Funny how he chose a similar name... I also noticed that the extension has no options to speak of (it simply allows you to copy text to the system clipboard), hasn't been updated in over a year, and the guy's site gives the impression that the extension is already dead.

Aside from your comment above, I have not yet had any requests for porting to those browsers thus far. I have previously considered it in passing, but have not yet looked into doing so. If or when I do get around to porting, all versions will have identical logo's and point back to this site. Currently I am working through some things in the code, but I will consider porting again once I complete this stage of the project.

Copy As Plain Text

Post by Mehtuus » May 6th, 2015, 4:15 am

Have you ever copy & pasted something into your email or office program and been annoyed that the text formatting (bold, font size, etc) came with it? Don't you wish you could just copy the text itself, without having to copy it, paste it into a plain text editor, then copy it again? This extension gives you an option to copy text without the formatting. And unlike the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+V), you can even customize how it will copy & paste.

Options Include:
  • Trim space from beginning & ending of selected text
  • Remove duplicate spaces
  • Remove blank lines
  • NEW Remove carriage returns (IE: line brakes)
  • NEW Remove ALL spaces & lines
  • NEW Copy numbers ONLY
  • Use plain text as default copy method (FIXED in v1.00.75 - local download below)

Features:
  • Works with numerous applications such as Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, etc.
  • Works with beta and alpha versions; such as Aurora (Firefox, SeaMonkey) and Earlybird (Thunderbird).
  • Switched AutoCopy support to Auto Copy Plus.
  • Uses key-combo Ctrl+Shift+C. Alternatively, you can use the right-click-menu and choose "Copy As Plain Text".
  • Multiplatform: runs on operating systems such as BSD, Linux, Mac, and Windows.
  • Multilingual; includes locale files for: cs*, de-DE*, en-US, es, fr-FR, it-IT, ja-JP*, nl*, pl*, pt*, ru*, sv-SE
    * These language files need to be verified for proper grammar by a natural speaker. (more on the way)

How to bypass the unverified error:
  1. In the URL bar type about:config and press enter. A configuration page will load.
  2. On that page, type xpinstall.signatures.required in the search box.
  3. Double-click the preference (or right-click and selected "Toggle") to set it to false.
  4. Restart Firefox.

Special EVE1000 edition:
Copy As Plain Text v1000.0.9.xpi
This is a special EVE version of my own addon. In order to not interfere with my official addon, it has a version number of 1000. It also allows for installation into Firefox, Thunderbird, etc. up to version 1000. This edition unfortunately will not automatically update itself. When an update is posted here (ie: v1000.0.10) for this special EVE plugin, you must return to this page to download the updated file and then install it. You may wish to use a program or web service to monitor this page for changes. You can find my EVE version of the Follow That Page addon here (forthcoming).

Copy Plain Text - EVE (Copy As Plain Text) vs. Ctrl+Shift+V
For a visual and hands on demonstration of the differences between Copy Plain Text - EVE and the built-in function Ctrl+Shift+V I have created a rich text document (.odt) and made it available. You can use the viewer on the site and/or download the document here: http://bit.ly/xRPvCa

Known Issues:
│➤ FIXED (v1.00.75): When copy as plain text is set as the default copy mode, does not strip formatting.
│➤ FIXED (v1.00.78): When user copies text with formatting (instead of plain text), the browser hangs for a few seconds.
│➤ When no options are selected in settings, the "Copy As Plain Text" menu item is still visible but grayed out.
│➤ When striping code, bullets (from a bullet list), and other non-text items (like buttons and text boxes) show up as an extra space.
│➤ Copying HTML tables: For each "cell data" a space is generated between the text. Very complex tables can result in jumbled formatting.

Road Map for v1.01:
The plugin has been getting some love lately, and in addition to internal code reworking, below are just a few of the features being labored on for the next official release on the Mozilla addons page.
  • Modernizing internal code to meet Mozilla's validation requirements.
  • Repair Default Copy Mode
  • Updating and clarifying the options dialog. (stage 1)
  • User Requested Features:
    • Remove All Spaces
    • Ability to remove carriage returns
    • Copy only numbers
( = incomplete.)
( = complete. Check local download link above for availability.)

DEVELOPMENT NOTES:

February 15, 2016
Mozilla has implemented substantial changes to their addon ecosystem. Legacy addon programing is being phased out for a new implementation. I am already seeing the ripple effects of this change. Due to the level with which this is going to have an effect on CAPT, updates have been paused to allow transitioning to the new system. Development in this area is ongoing and I will update here as more information comes available.
